Configuring Versamail to work with Gmail IMAP…Treo Users rejoice.

In an earlier post I had mentions that Gmails IMAP service is NOT compatible with Versamail.

With a little tinkering, I have gotten it working.

[NOTE] I am currently using Versamail v 3.5.2 . I am slowly getting in reports that these settings might not work with earlier versions.

Here are the settings I used

  • Account Name: Gmail (this is arbitrary)
  • Mail Service: Other
  • Protocol: IMAP
  • User Name: username@gmail.com
  • Password: (password here)
  • Email Address: username@gmail.com
  • Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
  • Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com

Now for the Advanced Settings

  • Incoming Server Settings:
  • Port Number: 993
  • Use Secure Connection (SSL) should be checked YES
  • Outgoing Server Settings:
  • Port Number: 465
  • Use Secure Connection (SSL) should be checked YES
  • Use Authentication should be checked YES
  • User Name: username@gmail.com
  • Password: (password here)

There you go, Gmail IMAP on Versamail.

Please let me know if you have any issues. I have been able to sync with my mailbox, and send multiple emails using this setup.

[Update]

Although these settings do allow full IMAP access, it does seem to be a little unstable on my Treo 680.

When hitting the “Get” button, it occasionally reboots my phone. I will continue to play around with the settings to see if we can make stable, but for right now this is as good as its going to get.

[Update]

I have pretty much given up on using Gmail IMAP on my phone. Versamail has been working fine for me, except a majority of my messages originate from Exchange servers and end up being cut short. For now I will stick to the free Gmail app, and the occasion POP access . I did give Chatter a run through its trial, but as good a program it is, I didn’t care for it.

[Update] January 17, 2008

Am working on a quick set up tutorial for Expressmail which is a free download for the ATT Treo 680 (it is one of those annoying icons that you can’t get rid of). More to come.

Expressmail seems to work just fine.

  1. My 755p fails constantly trying to sync with your settings. I’ll keep tweaking and see if I can get it to work.

  2. Under the “Protocol” — I dont see “other” as an option in my Treo680. Its either “POP”, “IMAP” or “Exchange Activesync”. So how do i choose the “other” option for protocol?

  3. I apologize, I meant IMAP under protocol. The post has been edited.

  4. This must depend on what version of versamail you’re using. It doesn’t work with these settings or any other I’ve tried on my Treo 650.

  5. For the record I am using Palm Versamail v. 3.5.2 on a Treo 680.

I don’t see why other recent versions wouldn’t work under these settings also?

  6. I’m having no luck using VersaMail 3.5.1 on my Treo 700p with these settings… going to try going to Chatter Email to see if that works.

  7. From what I understand, Chattermail works fine.
Its just those of us who stuck with Versamail who are out of the loop.

  8. Thank you for posting this!
    I’m using a Treo 680p and Versamail 3.5.2

It connects to Gmail, starts to download the first message, and stops with an error about being unable to complete the download. I go to the message, ask for the rest of the message, sometimes get it, sometimes just get a blank. Sync again, Gmail downloads the first 5k of the *next* message. (I have changed the message size limit to 50k but this is being ignored).

Also a message deleted on the Treo does not get deleted in GMail.

I have 474 messages in my inbox and looks like it’s taking 5 clicks and three syncs per. Ouch.

  9. No go for me with my Treo 650 and Versamail 3.1B.

More precisely, it connects and appears to check mail successfully (and extremely quickly), but the result is always an empty inbox.

  10. One thing I did to prevent both the device from freezing up, and from long buggy downloads is limit it to just downloading emails from the last 2 weeks.
I wouldn’t dare let it download all my mail from GMail (I have over 2500 messages).

The support isn’t all there, but so far if you are using a Treo 680 with Versamail v.3.5.2, it does work somewhat.

  11. IT WORKED………the difference was the Port Number 465….the default was…25

    thanks

    Albert

  12. When I get messages, they are massively truncated.I am using 3.5.3. Anyone know why this is happening? When I use gmail POP the whole message is there. I try to download the mesage and it makes no difference. What am I missing?

  13. Mine just started to do that to me.
I thought it was from the maximum message size setting, but it seems to be a versamail issue.

I’ll play with it and see what can be done.

  14. i can receive email fine … i can’t send …pls help!

  15. I can also receive mail with a Treo 650. It restarted the first time, and in de second one, it only got the first two messages, then it disconnected.
It was unable to send email anyway…

  16. thanks for posting the settings…your site was listed third when I googled, “Gmail IMAP Versamail”

I’m using a Palm Centro and had IMAP working with Chattermail, but still haven’t figure out how to do it with Versamail. The settings you posted didn’t do the trick. I’m playing around with it right now, but the process stalls at the “Connecting to IMAP Server…” screen.

  17. I’ve gotten Chattermail on my Treo 680n to work with Gmail’s IMAP configuration, except for the well-known bug that HTML message only load the headers with the body being blanks. The pop-up message, however, will show the text, but if I try to open an HTML e-mail message from Chatter’s inbox, it won’t display the body. So if I miss the pop-up when a new message comes in, I have to go to Gmail via my phone’s Web browser to read it.

My understanding is that Gmail is a great choice for iPhone users as Google has put a lot of effort into getting its service to work with the iPhone, but for Palm or Windows Mobile, you simply can’t use IMAP to view HTML messages. I’m not sure if the same is true with Blackberries, but one can always use the Google e-mail client for Blackberry (for those of us using Google Hosted Apps, there is not client for Palm or Windows Mobile).

  18. Still works fine in 2011!
Thanks for those settings… works 100% using Versamail 3.5.5 on a Treo 650
